Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an annual campaign dedicated to raising awareness about online safety. Since its launch in 2004, the initiative has been led by the National Cybersecurity Alliance and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

This year’s theme, “Securing the Next 250,” emphasizes the shared responsibility of protecting critical infrastructure against cyber threats. CISA encourages organizations to strengthen their defenses through measures such as phishing awareness, strong passwords, multifactor authentication, software updates, data backups and incident-response planning.

The importance of these measures is highlighted by the growing financial impact of cyber incidents. According to IBM’s 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report, the global average cost of a data breach reached a record $4.99 million, up 12% from the previous year.

Recent vulnerabilities identified in PHP, a programming language widely used to support websites and web applications, illustrate why cybersecurity awareness remains important. PHP is used by nearly 70% of websites where the server-side programming language is known, demonstrating how vulnerabilities in commonly used technology can have broad impacts.

Strong cybersecurity controls are the first line of defense. Cyber insurance can complement those controls by providing financial protection and access to resources that help businesses respond to and recover from cyber incidents.

BCS offers cyber insurance solutions tailored to an organization’s business needs.
