Each year the BCS Community Service team coordinates several charitable events for employees through the BCS Cares initiative. They routinely seek out non-profit organizations whose missions strongly align with ours, and help us be a force for good by giving back to our communities.
This year, BCS teamed up with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) at our annual company picnic (part of BCS Appreciation Week) to raise more than $4,000 for pediatric cancer research.
While raising money for pediatric cancer research is surely a worthy cause, it also holds a special place for BCS as a high-cost claims expert: we’ve seen first-hand how costly cancer diagnoses can be. In fact, in our 2021 High Cost Claims Insight Report, we shared that cancer as a primary diagnosis episode of care continues to be the most-costly catastrophic illness, and 33% of all claimants exceeding $1M claim costs were generated by children aged 5 and below.
Scientists are developing new targeted therapies (precision medicine) that are designed to interfere with molecules and cancer-causing genes to slow the spread of cancer cells, and spare children the harsh side effects of traditional cancer treatments. These life-saving treatments are important and exciting, but will come with a heavy price tag.
To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand has raised more than $250 million and funded over 1,000 cutting-edge research projects in their efforts to end childhood cancer. BCS is proud to be a small part in these fundraising efforts.
